Time

John 2: 1-4

“On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”

“Woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.”

We revisit the introductory verses of chapter 2 again because something else of significance happens. Jesus talks about his “hour” and the fact that it “has not yet come.”

Q: What do you think Jesus means by the term his “hour” and when do you think he expected it to begin?

6 Replies to “Time”

  1. Time for Jesus to reveal Himself as the Messiah!!!!
    Even His mom can’t wait!!

    Happy Thursday morning everyone.

  2. Thank You Robster, rising early you leave nothing to to add.

  3. Happy Thursday morning to you too Lobster… I mean Robster. I agree, not much more to add.

  4. The term “hour” had a different meaning in Jesus’ day. Today we associate it with a fixed period of time. Before the invention of clocks however, an hour was just a division of the day that changed with the seasons. In that light an hour is simply a period of time. Yes, it was a time for revealing truth but also a time for suffering and dying.

  5. Sort of piggy-backing from research I did the other day, when Jesus spoke of His “hour” he was referring to His time to die for the sins of mankind. Jesus spoke of other “hours” as well.

Matthew 24:36 “But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only.”

Matthew 25:13 “Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.”

Matthew 24:42-44 “Therefore, stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.”

I think about how many times I tried to devise and implement the “perfect” vacation, work project, ect only to have some small insignificant detail unravel it all. I believe Jesus didn’t have an expectation of when His hour would start. Jesus modeled exactly how we should approach the future: pray and trust that God has in His mind the perfect timeline.

    1. Good advice, Chris!

Trust in God’s timing. I suppose it is a bit like a railroad system. Because only one train fits on the tracks at a time, there has to be a controller that orchestrates the schedule for all of the trains. If your train is stuck on a siding waiting for permission to get back on the main track, it may seem frustrating. “Why can’t I go now? There is no one on the track!” No one that you can see, that is. God sees all of the tracks all of the time. He knows when they are safe and when they are not. His timing is perfect.
