Power

John 7: 32, 44-46

” The Pharisees heard the crowd whispering such things about him. Then the chief priests and the Pharisees sent temple guards to arrest him.

Some wanted to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him.

Finally the temple guards went back to the chief priests and the Pharisees, who asked them, “Why didn’t you bring him in?’

“No one ever spoke the way this man does,’ the guards replied.”

The way John tells this part of the story makes me smile. In verse 32 he tells us about the temple guards being sent out to arrest Jesus. It is not until twelve verses later the temple guards show up again without Jesus. What were they doing all of this time?

Apparently, based on what they told the Pharisees, they had been listening to Jesus. Think about that for a moment. Armed men sent out to arrest Jesus are stopped from doing their job by the power of what Jesus was saying.

Q: Do Jesus’ words sound ordinary to you, or do you find that there is power in them?

3 Replies to “Power”

  1. The words of Jesus convey the wisdom and power of God. The more I examine the words, the more amazed I become.

  2. His words have tremendous power and they have absolutely changed my life, my passions, my purpose.

  3. Power is a good title for this devotion. Jesus had true power and authority. He clearly performed miracles and taught from scripture with a unique authority. The guards couldn’t deny it and even the Pharisee’s couldn’t avoid the fact that something supernatural was going on – they just responded by claiming it was the power of Satan.

I find Jesus words to be powerful, but I do look forward to seeing what I believe – to personally seeing His power and glory displayed.
