Luke 1: 46-55
” And Mary said:
My soul glorifies the Lord
and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
for he has been mindful
of the humble state of his servant.
From now on all generations will call me blessed,
for the Mighty One has done great things for me—
holy is his name.
His mercy extends to those who fear him,
from generation to generation.
He has performed mighty deeds with his arm;
he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts.
He has brought down rulers from their thrones
but has lifted up the humble.
He has filled the hungry with good things
but has sent the rich away empty.
He has helped his servant Israel,
remembering to be merciful
to Abraham and his descendants forever,
just as he promised our ancestors.”
I wish we could camp on this passage for a whole week, but Christmas is coming and we need to keep moving toward our Savior’s birthday.
Yesterday I wondered why Mary went to visit Elizabeth. Today we get a peek into her soul. This young woman sets the bar exceedingly high for purity of heart and motives. She is overcome with joy at the words of the Holy Spirit through Elizabeth and her own joy overflows into this beautiful song. She bursts forth with, “My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior…”
Q: What would it be like for a person’s soul to glorify the Lord?
? Hopefully it looks like us?
Well, if glorifying God refers to seeing Him, making Him known, making known that which was not known; then, perhaps one way to look at this is that her soul magnified His presence in her heart. In turn, God’s qualities would reflect out of her onto others to help Him be seen by many. Good question and good to think about.
