Magic

Have you ever thought about why Jesus used mud when he healed the man’s blindness? After all, Jesus had already calmed the storm, walked on water, and healed the man at the pool called Bethesda simply by telling him to get up and walk.

“How then were your eyes opened?” they asked.
He replied, ” The man they call Jesus made some mud and put it on my eyes. He told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed, and then I could see.”
“Where is this man?” they asked him.
“I don’t know,” he said.

John 9: 10-12

The question of how the man’s blindness was cured is an intriguing one. Human curiosity being what it is, people want to know how it was done. Is it such a stretch to imagine people thinking about it as a magic trick? How did he do that?

Q: Describe what goes through your mind when you are confronted by the fact that a man born blind is now able to see and the person who healed him put mud on his eyes to make it happen.

  1. If I were blind I would not care how or what Jesus did to heal me. I would simply be rejoicing that I could see. What goes through my mind is gratefulness.

  2. Hmm, I agree with Rich. I would just be happy to be see, though I would think about it afterwards. I often wonder why God does things the way he does – it can look odd – but I also see the result and praise him even if I don’t get all of the reasons why.
