I wonder what I would think of a blind man sitting to the side of the road begging? For me, begging always seems to conjure up images of someone unwilling to work. Of course, if a person is blind, that makes it hard to do any kind of productive work. That doesn’t mean, however, that a blind person does not have brains or would not do work if they were able to.
Then they asked him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?”
He answered, “I have told you already and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you want to become his disciples too?”
John 9: 26-27
In this passage, we see a man with both brains and guts. He clearly “sees” what is going on, and he has the courage to call the Pharisees out on their hypocrisy. In this passage he takes on the role of warrior. Put yourself in his place. Don’t you think what he did took guts?
I don’t know that I would have had the guts in his situation, like him I would care far more that I could see than the Pharisees kicking me out of the synagogue.
I think that the formerly blind man is a good example of someone to try to emulate. I hope I can stand firm for Jesus as he did when the time comes.
