Jesus answered: ”Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me?”
Today’s verse represents what is for me a theological mountain too high to climb. Jesus says, “Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father.” How does that work?
At this point, I have to step back from my earthbound human perspective for a moment. Remember that Jesus speaks like someone from outside space and time. He looks at things from a heavenly perspective. We tend to look at things from an earthly perspective. This difference in perspective is why people did not understand Jesus.
Looking at this situation from a heavenly perspective is impossible for an earthbound human. The best we can do is to look through the eyes of our heart or our imagination. Somehow, Jesus is so bound up in God’s will that there is no space between them. Jesus is the perfect representation of God in human form.
Amazing.
Maybe someday when I am able to see things from a heavenly perspective myself, I will understand.
Let’s Discuss: What is it about Jesus that allows you to believe him when he says, “Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father”?
We holiness, but through Jesus we can experience this. It is my hope in Jesus that allows me to try and approach this.
Good morning to you all.
Good morning, Robster! Always good to hear from you!!
You remind me of the Holy Mountain where God gave Moses the Ten Commandments. Everyone was to stay away from it. Now, through Jesus, we can approach the Holy Mountain with Him.
I think His sinless nature, loving sacrifice on the cross, ability to do miracles and raise the dead, amazing teaching and life reflect the image of God in such a way that He is hard to ignore.
Hi Rich –
Yes, Jesus embodies all of these things and I agree, it is hard to ignore! 🙂
I trust him and what he says about himself is true. His character is evident and I know him enough to trust his word.
Nathan,
Trust is a relational entity. Isn’t it wonderful that God allows us to relate to him through Jesus?
