My son, do not forget my teaching,
but keep my commands in your heart,
for they will prolong your life many years
and bring you peace and prosperity.
— Proverbs 3: 1-2
What do you want out of life? Do you know? Are you looking for things to do that will shorten your life? Do you like to suffer? Are you the kind of person who enjoys going hungry?
Of course not!
Nobody in their right mind (and I grant you that there are people who are not in their right mind!) wants to die young. So hopefully we can agree that it is desirable to prolong life and enjoy the time in peace and prosperity.
Once again, God’s instruction book for humanity comes through. Who better to learn from than the wisest man who ever lived? Who is better qualified to instruct us in serving God than Solomon himself?
If you guess the right answer on a TV game show you can win some nice prizes. In real life, if you pay attention to God’s wisdom and keep his commands in your heart, you win the best prize of all.
Application: Study the book of Proverbs every day for a year. Test God on this. See what happens.
Food for Thought: What is long life, peace and prosperity worth?
That would be hard to measure. But it seems to be what we are all seeking. The only thing better than life long peace and prosperity is eternal peace and prosperity.
I wasn’t in my right mind for most of my life then. Now I want a quiet and peaceful life. Its amazing what The Holy Spirit can do.
