Jude 1: 14b — Enoch’s Prophecy

several piles of gold coins each larger than the last.

See, the Lord is coming with thousands upon thousands of his holy ones to judge everyone, and to convict all of them of all the ungodly acts they have committed in their ungodliness, and of all the defiant words ungodly sinners have spoken against him.

I am a little out of my depth when we get the End Times Prophecy department. Pr. Rich is the expert in that area as far as I am concerned. So outside of taking a contextual look at Enoch’s prophecy, let’s take a specific look at this passage and see what we can learn.

First, Jude is using a source of information on this topic that is not mentioned anywhere else in the Bible. This is new information about Enoch.

Second, generally speaking, Enoch’s words match other end-times prophecies.

Third, Jude is telling us that Enoch’s prophecy points to judgment. “… the Lord is coming… to judge everyone…”

We need to be aware of this truth and prepared for it. How? By trusting in the saving grace of Jesus.

Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.

(John 3: 18)

In our world today we are confronted by a large number of loud people who stand on their soapbox and claim to have the moral high ground. They speak lies and call those who speak truth liars. Such people do not act like people who are worried about a coming judgment. Instead, they act like people who are worried about getting as much power and wealth as they can pile up before they die.

Application: The Lord is coming. Be prepared!

Food for Thought: Why do the ungodly people need to be convicted of their ungodly acts and words?

  1. Hospitals are where the sick come to get healed (healthy) again. In Jude’s reading today, it is the Lord coming to do the convicting and judging

1peter 4:17 tells us “judgment must begin at the house if God.”

Our focus could be on helping convict the ungodly or our (the church) could focus on being prepared to help heal the sick (sinners saved by grace).

The pleading from the pulpit today needs to be praying for sinners, prepare for convicted sinners to come, and we need to grow in healing gifts to help them become whole.

  2. Thank you Anonymous. Well said. And thank you Jeff, I think you handled this difficult passage well. I also think the ungodly need to be convicted so that they have the opportunity to repent and turn to Jesus now rather than experience God’s wrath and judgment later. This truly is life and death. John 3: 18 was a great verse reference. John 3:36 a few verses later says something similar. I saw a T-shirt on a teenager yesterday that said, “You will need Jesus.” That is the truth for all of us.

    1. Rich,
      Thank you for the encouragement!
Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them.” (John 3:36) A stubborn human heart is both amazing and tragic to behold.

  3. Why do the ungodly people need to be convicted of their ungodly acts and words?

Prior to ascending to His Father, Jesus told us of the coming Holy Spirit, as well as the work He would preform.
The Spirit will convict the world, about the guilt of sin, the need for a Savior, about righteousness, judgment: John 16:8-11
He paid the price for our sins: For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life: John 3:16

God has provided for our salvation, we simply must simply choose to admit what we are, and choose to turn from ourselves, to Him for salvation/forgiveness. He will not force anyone.

God restrains His power by revealing our true nature to the degree we can still exercise free will and deny our guilt, choose to live our way. All who reject the restrained conviction of God during this lifetime will face the unrestrained truth when they stand before God, and there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth as the righteous receive the kingdom with God, but they who chose to reject His truth, receive their choice, separation from God. Luke 13:28

    1. Ron,
You paint a grim picture for the unbeliever. Grim, but true. I hope and pray that all men and women, young and old will come to a point where they realize the truth of God’s Word and the reality of judgment to come.
