Titus 3:2 (a) — A Weapon of Voice

Remind the people … to slander no one …

Summary: Slander is an untruth that eats at a person’s reputation. Even if the slanderer believes that the lie is true, the damage that follows can never be fully undone.

Titus 3:1 (c) — Stop and Go

Remind the people … to be obedient …

Summary: Obedience is a challenge. There are many people and rules that we are supposed to obey. We now have more rules in our country than any one person can know, let alone obey. Yet our willingness to obey still sets us apart from the worldly.

Titus 2:15 (b) — All Authority

Encourage and rebuke with all authority.

Summary: The word “encouragement” is often translated as “exhort.” The word rebuke is almost always the same. Both are two sides of the same coin. How and when they are applied depends on the authority in the moment.

Titus 2:13 (b) — In The Air

—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ …

Summary: Paul’s words in this passage identify Jesus as God and Savior. These are two parts of what scholars call “the Trinity.” The word is dangerous if it causes someone to think that they understand our God. That would be a bit like an ant claiming to understand Shakespeare.

Titus 2:11 — Unspeakable Love

For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people.

Summary: Knowing our Lord and talking about him are two different things. We can do one without the other. However, when we know the Lord and talk about him, the way we talk says as much as the words we use.

Titus 2:10 (a) — Works vs Works

… and not to steal from them …

Summary: God commanded the Israelites not to steal, but that was a long time ago. Does faith in God still mean we cannot steal?

Titus 2:9 (c) — Footsteps

… not to talk back to them …

Summary: Authority in others is a difficult thing for us to accept. Whether legitimate or not, we tend to bridle when told what to do. Yet God’s Word teaches us not to talk back to them.

Titus 2:9 (b) — Serving God

… to try to please them …

Summary: Life is full of difficult situations. People are people and without God’s love in their heart they are often unpleasant to be around and serve. Yet it is God’s will that we try to please them.
