Summary: People tend to cling to their own perspectives. It is hard to let go. When we read something we don’t understand, we put a sticky note over the words with our own understanding written on top. This is where disagreements begin.

Titus 1:7 (f) — Mark of the Maker

Summary: Paul has laid out a description of what marks a man as unfit for managing God’s household. By applying deductive logic, we can surmise why this is and what is needed to transform a man into someone ready for service.

Summary: Paul continues with his discourse on what to avoid in a church leader, especially an overseer. All we have to do now is figure out what he means by “not given to drunkenness.”

Titus 1:7 (d) — Paul’s Scale

…not quick-tempered…

Summary: Paul’s letter compares things we should not do with things a believer should do. We then look at the first “not” on Paul’s list. A godly person, one who is qualified to be an overseer, is not quick-tempered.

Summary: What does it mean that Jesus is Christ and Savior? The words have simple meanings that describe things beyond human understanding.

Titus 1:4 (e) — The Gift of our Father

… from God the Father …

Summary: Before Jesus was born, mankind could only look upon God as … God. Jesus, the Son of God had a different relationship with God than all of mankind. Jesus was his son. When Jesus completed his work here on earth, we were given the gift of being welcomed back into God’s family.

Titus 1:4 (b) — Family Ties

… my true son in our common faith …

Summary: Paul’s reference to Titus as his ”son” in the faith opens up a door to understanding how God sees us spiritually and how we should see each other spiritually.

Titus 1:2 (c) — Once Upon a Time

[the hope of eternal life]… promised before the beginning of time …

Summary: God’s ”time” is very different from ours. Before our time began, he knew the cost of offering us eternal life and he willingly paid it.

1 Peter 5:11 — Ultimate Power

Many years ago the steam engine was the symbol of power. Times change!

To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.

Summary: A doxology is an acknowledgement of God’s divinity and authority. The affirmation of God’s power is a unique kind of doxology that affirms our dependence on God.
