He saved us … because of his mercy. 

Summary: Putting ourselves in God’s place for a moment feels weird. Yet there is something to be learned in making the attempt. We discover that creating humanity also created the possibility of family.

Titus 3:4 — A Kind of Kindness

But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared …

Summary: The word “kindness” is sometimes misunderstood to refer to someone who never says a mean word. As we look at today’s passage, we discover that what is important is the moral quality of the person or being the word refers to.

Titus 3:3 (e) — The Road to Freedom

At one time we too were … enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures.

Summary: The road to freedom is a beautiful adventure. The end of the road is the beginning of a new life in heaven. Meanwhile, here on earth, we can be free of the shackles of the desires of the flesh.

At one time we too were … deceived …

Summary: Being a demon is hard work. You cannot force people to leave God’s Light, you have to tempt them. Fortunately for the demons, their work is made easier when we turn our back on God.

Titus 3:2 (a) — A Weapon of Voice

Remind the people … to slander no one …

Summary: Slander is an untruth that eats at a person’s reputation. Even if the slanderer believes that the lie is true, the damage that follows can never be fully undone.

Titus 3:1 (d) — Do Good

Remind the people … to be ready to do whatever is good …

Summary: The meaning of the word “good” depends on whose point-of-view you are talking about. Worldly good is about pleasing the flesh. Spiritual good is about pleasing God.

Titus 3:1 (c) — Stop and Go

Remind the people … to be obedient …

Summary: Obedience is a challenge. There are many people and rules that we are supposed to obey. We now have more rules in our country than any one person can know, let alone obey. Yet our willingness to obey still sets us apart from the worldly.

Do not let anyone despise you.

Summary: The word “despise” sounds like an emotional response. Yet it can also be an expression of disrespect. Paul’s instruction on this matter requires some thought and perspective.
