2 Peter 3:10c — Face to Face

… and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare.

Summary: God’s Word explains clearly in many ways that there will be a final judgment. In today’s passage, Peter repeats this truth one more time.

2 Peter 3:10b — Electric Balloons

2 Peter 3:9d — Street Preachers

… but [God wants] everyone to come to repentance.

Summary: The word “repent” often carries with it vague connotations of emotional trauma. In fact, what Peter is telling us is that if we reject the idea of God, God wants us to change our minds.

Luke 1: 38 — Christmas Eve

“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her.

Summary: It is easy to get caught up in “going with the flow” and celebrate Christmas without knowing why. Pausing to think about why we celebrate Christmas will add meaning and light to our celebration.

2 Peter 3:8 — Big Red Button

But do not forget this one thing …

2 Peter 3:7c — Smoke

… being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.

Summary: Understanding the day of judgment is helpful to understanding our relationship with God. He is the creator, we are the created. If we do not function as we were created to, then we cannot be used. Like scrap wood at a construction site, such people end up in the fire.

2 Peter 3:6 — Water

By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed.

Summary: Peter continues his message about those who do not believe and work to undermine God’s church. One way they do this is to scoff at the idea that God could flood the whole earth.

2 Peter 3:5c — Building Blocks

…and the earth was formed out of water and by water.

Summary: The Bible is amazingly accurate from a technical standpoint. God’s Word provides a comprehensive understanding of our place in all that exists.

2 Peter 3:5b — Heavens

…that long ago by God’s word the heavens came into being…

Summary: The Bible packs a lot of information into small sentences. Understanding what the heavens are means understanding the temporary nature of the universe.

2 Peter 3:4 — Logic & Reason

They [the scoffers] will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised? Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.”

Summary: Logic is something we all use in some form. Even the scoffer uses a kind of logic. The question then becomes a question of fact; what do we know?
