Titus 1:15 (c) — Wheel and Brake

In fact, both their minds and consciences are corrupted. 

Summary: The mind and the conscience are like the steering wheel and the brake on a car. They each have important functions. If they don’t work properly, the car is not safe to drive. The same is true for people.

Titus 1:11 (a) — Shush!

They must be silenced …

Summary: The NIV translates “epistomizō” as “must be silenced.” In English, that phrase is open to broad interpretation. Looking to Jesus helps us understand Paul’s intent.

Summary: The case of the circumcision group offers us an example of disagreements in the early church. Some were resolved by discussion. Others festered and turned into open conflict.

Summary: Understanding what Paul means by “rebellious people is difficult. It is probable that his only concern is protecting the purity of the Gospel.

Titus 1:9 (d) — Smooshed

… by sound doctrine …

Summary: People tend to cling to their own perspectives. It is hard to let go. When we read something we don’t understand, we put a sticky note over the words with our own understanding written on top. This is where disagreements begin.

… so that he can encourage others …

Summary: We live in an imperfect world. Sometimes our words go astray or are misused. We need encouragement in the struggle against darkness. God’s Word provides us with a bright hope in dark times.

Summary: Paul has laid out a description of what marks a man as unfit for managing God’s household. By applying deductive logic, we can surmise why this is and what is needed to transform a man into someone ready for service.

Summary: Paul continues with his discourse on what to avoid in a church leader, especially an overseer. All we have to do now is figure out what he means by “not given to drunkenness.”

Titus 1:7 (d) — Paul’s Scale

…not quick-tempered…

Summary: Paul’s letter compares things we should not do with things a believer should do. We then look at the first “not” on Paul’s list. A godly person, one who is qualified to be an overseer, is not quick-tempered.

Titus 1:7 (c) — Christians with “a Peel”

[Since an overseer manages God’s household, he must be blameless] —not overbearing …

Summary: Paul’s letter provides instructions for a mature believer in Christ to recognize other mature believers. In those who are mature leaders will be found.
