1 Timothy 1:1a – Father Paul

Paul …

Summary: As we begin to explore Paul’s first letter to Timothy, it is interesting to note the relationship between Paul and Timothy. Paul’s adoption of Timothy as a son colors everything we will read here.

Paul begins his letter to Timothy in the formal style of his day. If you squint your eyes when you look at his letter, it really isn’t much different from our letters today.

Philippians 4:20a – Glory and Honor

Conversion of St Paul on the Road to Damascus. Acts 9. From Gustave Dore Bible 1865-1866. Wood Engraving.

To our God and Father be glory for ever and ever.

Summary: Our God and Father is worthy of all honor and glory — always.

It has been a long journey through Paul’s letter to the Philippians! Each meditation has explored only one facet of the passage or word it focuses on. God’s Word is amazing in its depth and breadth of meaning (Isaiah 55:9). I am reminded of John’s words at the end of his Gospel:

Philippians 2:25 Part II – Brother

But I think it is necessary to send back to you Epaphroditus, my brother…

Summary: Paul’s reference to Epaphroditus as a “brother” is a good excuse to consider what it means to be part of God’s family.

Paul has given Epaphroditus several titles. It might be useful to take a closer look at each one and see what we can learn from them.

The first title given to Epaphroditus is “Brother.”

Philippians 2:22 – To Advance the Gospel

But you know that Timothy has proved himself, because as a son with his father he has served with me in the work of the gospel.

Summary: Timothy’s work for the Gospel of Jesus is revealed in Paul’s praise for his faithfulness as a son.

Each of us has a different idea of what a father is supposed to be. I sincerely hope that your situation includes a father who loves you and wants the best for you.

Philippians 2:15b – Star Light

Artistic rendering of stars in space (Pixabay)

“children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.” Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky…

Summary: Paul’s words point us to one of the most important questions facing Christians: How do we know we are saved?

What does he mean by suggesting that we can become “blameless and pure” (Philippians 1:15a) and “children of God without fault?” Is he suggesting that we can attain some level of perfection as believers in Christ?

Philippians 2:8a – Two Things

And being found in appearance as a man…

Summary: Paul is walking us through what it means to think like Jesus. His understanding of the Lord is reflected in the clarity of his description of what sets Jesus apart.

Paul is in the middle of describing the mindset of Jesus Christ.

Whatever you might think of Jesus, it seems obvious he was in a pickle. Here he was, the one through whom all things were made (John 1:3), reduced to being a social outcast in his own creation. (His disciple, Nathanael, when he found out Jesus was from Nazareth, said: “Can anything good come from there?” — John 1:46).

Philippians 2:7b – The Nature of a Servant

Jesus kneeling in prayer. (Grok)

… by taking the very nature of a servant,

Summary: This passage provides a critical description of Jesus’ character. Understanding Jesus requires that we try to understand what it means to have the “nature of a servant.”

To avoid using his “equality with God” as an advantage, Jesus did things that run counter to our natural instincts for self-preservation. One of those things was “taking the very nature of a servant.”

Philippians 2:6b – Fire and Ice

A picture of the earth floating in space. Half is on fire and half is covered in ice. (Grok)

[Jesus]… did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;

Summary: The nature of Jesus comes into focus in this passage. Understanding who Jesus is helps us understand how he wants us to live.

Who, exactly, is Jesus?

If you have read the Bible, or even if you have just heard about him from others, you probably know he is the “Messiah” (Matthew 16:16), the “Son of God” (Mark 1:1).
