Galatians 2:19 – Old Laws and New

If I rebuild what I destroyed, then I really would be a lawbreaker.

Summary: Keep up with Paul can be a challenge. In this passage he reflects on his personal journey with God’s law. The old covenant law is obsolete, and the “new law” is to trust in Jesus. If we try to mix the old with the new, we end up breaking the new law.

Galatians 2:17 – Crime and Punishment

But if, in seeking to be justified in Christ, we Jews find ourselves also among the sinners, doesn’t that mean that Christ promotes sin? Absolutely not!

Ephesians 4:17a – A Kind of Test

So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do …

Summary: Paul’s problem is that people who believe in God act differently than people who don’t. Being the “Apostle to the Gentiles” carried with it the added burden of educating Gentile believers about this difference.

Ephesians 4:1a – What Jesus Wants

As a prisoner for the Lord,

Summary: As Paul begins the fourth chapter of his letter, he reminds us that he is a prisoner “for the Lord.” To put this in perspective, it is helpful to reflect on Paul’s life and what it might have been like had he not met Jesus.

1 John 3:4 — There is no “I” in heaven

Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness.

Summary: In this meditation, we transition into a discussion of heaven. Interestingly, Jesus’ construction of the first two words of the prayer prepares us for understanding what heaven is all about.
