Philippians 4:6b – A Place of Prayer

… but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

Summary: In this passage, it sounds like Paul is saying the same thing twice when he writes, “by prayer and petition.” As it turns out, there is a world of difference between the English version and the Greek.

In this passage, Paul gives us a short primer on the topic. In one sense, it is really quite simple; no matter where you are or what you are doing, pray. When you pray, be thankful. Always present your requests to God.

Colossians 4:15 – Nympha

Give my greetings to the brothers and sisters at Laodicea, and to Nympha and the church in her house.

Summary: The mention of Nympha and the “church in her house” opens the door to considering other women of renown who served the Lord in different ways.

As we find our way through the last few verses of Paul’s letter to the Colossians, we have found several that are “greetings” from Paul and his associates to specific people. In this passage, we focus on the “brothers and sisters at Laodicea” and on a woman named Nympha who hosts a church in her home.

The mention of Nympha is a good reminder to focus on the role of women in the early church.

Colossians 2:23b – The Invisible Line

… with their self-imposed worship …

Summary: In this passage, Paul provides us with another clue to the difference between true and false religion.

The Greek word Paul used for “self-imposed worship” is “ethelothrēskia.”* (Pronounced “eth-el-oth-race-ki’-ah,” the word is a mouthful in Greek and English.) It is a composite of two other words that describe a kind of worship ceremonial in nature and that originates in the human will. An example of this kind of worship is given in Acts, chapter nineteen.

In the story told in Acts, the people of Ephesus traditionally worshipped a statue of a goddess named Artemis. At one point in the story, the city clerk describes the religion this way:

Colossians 2:18b – Detour

[Do not let] … the worship of angels disqualify you.

Summary: This passage is a lot deeper than it looks. As we dive into the topic we discover surprising truths about the spiritual realm and about our own hope for salvation.

As we look at this passage, several questions come to mind.

Why would anyone promote the idea of worshiping angels?
What does the Bible say about worshiping angels?
What does Paul mean by being disqualified?

The first question is impossible to answer because we can’t go back and ask whoever was doing it. Even if we could, the answer we got from them might not be the truth. We can guess, but it is only a guess, and in the end, it doesn’t really matter.

Worshipful – John 9: 35-38

Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and when he found him, he said, ”Do you believe in the Son of Man?”
”Who is he, sir?” the man asked. ”Tell me so that I may believe in him.”
Jesus said, ”You have now seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you.”
Then the man said, ”Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him.

The man born blind had never seen Jesus. He had heard his voice, but that was before Jesus knelt down to put mud on his eyes. He heard his command to go and wash, but he had no idea what to expect. He was just doing what he was told.
