The Light

Read John 1:1-5

John describes Jesus as, “the Word,” “God,” the maker of all things, the source of life, and “light.” Each of these word choices describes a facet of who Jesus is, much like turning a cut diamond under a strong light reveals the character of the diamond.

Q: What is it about light that makes the word such an appropriate description of who Jesus is?

  1. So right off the bat when I read the question the phrase that came to mind is “the truth will set you free.” The Word being the truth, and freedom being the ability to see things for what they are. “What is it about light that makes the word such an appropriate description of who Jesus is?” Because God/Jesus/The Holy Spirit enable us to have as much self-awareness as we can handle. They put a light in our hearts through the Word that show our true character and allow us an opportunity to work on eliminating the sins in our life.

Psalms 119:105 Thy Word [God’s Word] is a lamp unto my feet and light unto my path.

John 8:12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, He said, ‘I am the Light of the World. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but have the light of life.

    1. Chris,

I apologize for the delay in posting your comments. For some reason I still have to manually approve each one. (For others who may want to comment, please be patient. I check for comments each day.)

As to your insight about light and freedom, I like it! It makes a great deal of sense. Someone who is in the “dark” is not “free” to move around. We must feel our way as a blind person does. When there is light, we can see and move freely.

The light that Christ offers us illuminates the dark corners of our own soul. Once that happens, we can be free of the traps that Satan has set for us.
