Proverbs 3:13-14 — Profit

Blessed are those who find wisdom,
    those who gain understanding,
for she is more profitable than silver
    and yields better returns than gold.

Summary: This verse commingles two economic systems; the world of silver and gold, and the world of wisdom and understanding. Understanding these systems is helpful for the Christian who wants to gain wisdom and understanding.

Proverbs 3:11-12 — Father and Son

My son, do not despise the Lord’s discipline,
    and do not resent his rebuke,
because the Lord disciplines those he loves,
    as a father the son he delights in.

Summary: Discipline is a word that has multiple applications. God uses all forms of discipline to teach us his ways.

Proverbs 3:9-10 — Jesus is Watching

Honor the Lord with your wealth,
    with the firstfruits of all your crops;
then your barns will be filled to overflowing,
    and your vats will brim over with new wine.

Summary: Giving is what God does all day long. If we want to be like our God and honor what he has done in our life, we will do the same.

Do not be wise in your own eyes;
    fear the Lord and shun evil.

Summary: Solomon was a smart guy. Some say he was so smart that he knew enough to know he was not smarter than God.

    and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways submit to him,
    and he will make your paths straight.

Proverbs 3: 1-2 — Good Communication

My son, do not forget my teaching,
    but keep my commands in your heart,
for they will prolong your life many years
    and bring you peace and prosperity.

Summary: Solomon demonstrates the wisdom that God has given him by modeling excellent communication techniques in these two verses.

Proverbs 2:20 — The Shady Diamond

Thus you will walk in the ways of the good
    and keep to the paths of the righteous.

Summary: As we walk through life we are confronted by choices over and over again. Which path will we take? It is good to have a goal and know which path you want to take before you set out.

Proverbs 2:11 — Sticks and Stones

Discretion will protect you,
    and understanding will guard you.

Summary: Words can hurt people just as much as beating someone with a stick can hurt. Denying that they hurt does not lead to understanding. Instead, it leads to denial. Wisdom suggests an alternative: Understand what is going on and use discretion to avoid causing pain to others and yourself.

Proverbs 2: 6 — Shadows

For the Lord gives wisdom;
    from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.

Summary: Wisdom is an interesting commodity. We know what happens when we do not have any, but what happens when we do? Do we actually want to use it?
